Hoping for a bumper crop of tomatoes
The Man and I went to the nursery this morning. Mom wants to add a plum tree to her growing backyard orchard of an apricot and a plum. She was willing to have one of the tree farms come out with a tree for $300 and I told her we'd see what Baker's has. We picked up a really nice 15 gal Santa Rosa "Easy Picker" (trained to branch out about 12" off the ground) for $40. It's maybe half the size of the $300 peach tree she bought last year but it is an awful nice, well-branched tree.
I wanted to go to Baker's because that's where we bought the Heatwave tomato pony packs last year. We have several nurseries closer to our place, but they either don't carry Heatwaves, or are selling them only in 5" pots and charging $3/each. Now, I don't begrudge them the price, nor do I criticise the people who may only want one or two plants so they can enjoy an occasional fresh tomato salad. But I wanted six plants, and I couldn't see paying $18.
Well, the nursery had them in pony packs again. The Man found three and I reminded him that ONE pack produced over 30 lbs last season. Considering I have six Early Girls in Mom's garden and twelve heirloom Black Krims in mine, I'm thinking if we have a successful season the six additional Heatwaves should give us more than enough. Still, I just couldn't resist so in the cart went the three pony packs along with a "Dusky" eggplant and a "Sugar Baby" watermelon. After we got everything packed in the car, The Man explained why he wanted extra plants; he'd like to try using them as a low hedge under our bedroom window, which faces the street. The plants are so bushy, the leaves are such a lovely dark shade that I had to agree they would make a lovely accent plant, and functional to boot.
We're planning on a gardening day at Mom's house tomorrow, so I'm going to have to clean the Mantis tiller's gas filter. It doesn't seem to want to start, sounds like it's a little starved for gas. I hope that's the only problem! I have bad, bad luck borrowing Mom's stuff. I always seem to break it or otherwise ruin it despite trying my darnest to make sure nothing blows up!
