An extraordinary urban agriculture website
Bestill my heart, I think I have just developed a passion for urban agriculture. I have found my tools to "bloom where I grow."
http://www.technologyforthepoor.com/ and then follow the link Urban Agriculture: A Guide to Container Gardens . The ideas this marvelous site suggests for container gardening are quite frankly brilliant in my mind.
I absolutely HATE weeding, I believe I mentioned that already. I enjoy tending plants, but I am the WORST when it comes to weeding. This is why every garden I've had has failed.
Who would have thought that a child's wading pool, easily gleaned out of alleys this time of year as families toss them out because swimming season is over, would make such a wonderful container for gardening? Here in the desert, keeping container plants properly hydrated in the summer is difficult at best. But I would think the size of a wading pool would help reduce the rapid drying of soil, just by sheer volume. A thick layer of newspaper and straw should help reduce evaporation.
I'm loving my Earthboxes, but a 4 foot diameter pool would make the perfect container for planting things like carrots, radishes, etc. I've got a pool we used for our dogs this summer, I'm going to commandeer it for my new hoe-free garden!
