TWO eggs today!
One of our Barred Rock pullets finally laid her first egg today. She started cackling and squawking almost four weeks ago, and every day we've been thinking "today's the day Tammy will get some help in the egg laying department." Well, today was the day. Tammy's been laying an egg just about every other day since spring; not bad for a 6+ year old hen! One of the black Jersey Giant pullets is getting ready to lay. She is certainly a striking bird, with her bright red comb and wattles/ear lobes. She and the barred rock pullet are constantly bickering over who gets to sit in the nest next. The Jersey is definitely more "nesty"; she will sit in the nest and arrange bits of straw, while the Barred Rock just plops herself in the middle and settles in.
Our other Barred Rock will probably be close behind, she's developing a nice deep red comb and a bit of color to her face. I read somewhere when the pullets start coloring up that way they are getting close to laying. If this is true, the other Jersey Giant pullet will most likely be awhile, as neither her tiny comb or tiny wattles/ear lobes have any color. She looks pretty much the same as she did a few months ago.
